This bachelor’s thesis discusses possible motives for Slovenian war volunteers to enter the Bosnian resistance against the Ottoman empire in 1875. The main focus is on a famous war volunteer Miroslav Hubmajer.
The latter possible reasons are elaborated: a romantic 19th-century view of military engagement, a desire for adventure and freedom, a desire for better economic status in society, hostile attitudes toward the Ottoman Empire, striving to connect with southern Slavs, newspaper propaganda and Austrian politics planning. The author came to the conclusion that the amount of primary sources
for identifying Hubmajer’s motives is rather modest. Nevertheless, with the selection she obtained, she came to the conclusion that he and other Slovene volunteers were most influenced by the romantic view of Slavdom and Slovene newspaper propaganda.
