Chalcogen derivatives are important compounds. In organic chemistry they can serve as intermediates in synthesis, and many of chalcogen compounds also exhibit biological activity. In recent years, chemistry using selenium and tellurium has evolved greatly. Selenium atom can be incorporated into compounds as a nucleophile or an electrophile. Electrophilic as well as nucleophilic selenium reagents are known. In this thesis I will describe some methods by which we can synthesise them. Selenocyanates can be prepared by direct or indirect selenocyanation. In chemistry they can be used as intermediates for further synthesis. Due to their various biological properties, they can also be used in chemotherapy. Like organoselenes, organotellurium chemistry has a wide field with greater possibilities for development. For example, selenium and tellurium containing 5-arylchalcogenoalkyl-1H-tetrazoles have displayed anifungal activity.
