Foster care is one of the measures adopted by the state to protect adolescents who temporarily cannot live in their original family. Since I presumed that adolescents can face many challenges when entering their foster family, I decided to examine these challenges as well as the challenges faced by foster mothers who accept an adolescent into their family.
I obtained information conducting interviews with adolescents, aged between 13 and 16, who have been part of the foster care system for at least two years. In addition, the research included foster mothers who have a permit to carry out foster care activities and have an adolescent in foster care. The results showed that adolescents face many challenges, which are mainly the result of the lack of information on how foster care works and the lack of opportunities for their cooperation. When it comes to foster mothers, they most frequently face challenges pertaining to the lack of knowledge on how to cooperate with adolescents and the lack of support from social workers.
