The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the distress of young people. Above all, I am interested in what distress means to young people, what are the strategies for helping people in need, to whom do they entrust their distress, how do they assess their own autonomy and what are the values of young people. I was interested in their stories, how do they describe their distress, what is their view on it, and what is their opinion on it. The diploma consists a theoretical and a research part.
In the theoretical part of the diploma, I explored what youth means, what are the characteristics of this period, and the characteristics of young people. In one part, I also describe the characteristics of young people in the last century, for a better understanding of the shift of the characteristics of this specific period and its changing that young people today are like that, with all the hardships and characteristics as they are. I also researched the areas that most often cause young people distress: family, school, peers, self-esteem, media and social networks. In the theoretical part, I refer to the strategies for solving distress, the autonomy of young people, and what are the values of young people.
In the research part, I present a qualitative survey I conducted with eight young people, four girls and four boys of various ages. Through the interviews and the discussion with young people, I explored their experiences with distress.
