Neuengamme concentration camp was established by the end of the year 1938 in the eponymous city district in Hamburg. Soon it became one of the largest Nazi concentration camps that remained operational till April or May 1945, respectively till the liberation by the Allied armed forces. The goal of this master thesis is to outline the general establishment, operation, and structure of Neuengamme concentration camp on one side and on the other to illuminate concrete experiences, based on testimonies, and present less known fates of hundreds of Slovene prisoners, that were imprisoned during the war in central concentration camp in Hamburg or in any of its satellite subcamps in the broader north German region. Besides that, this thesis will also cover an introduction to the repatriation process of surviving Slovenian prisoners and Neuengammes graduate development from concentration camp to a modern memorial site, focused on preserving the memory of one of the darkest eras in human history.
