In the theoretical part of this diploma thesis, I first present poverty among older people, social legislation and social security. Then, I focused on social security benefits and the rights of older people. I was interested also in learning about social - networks of older people, the role of the family in terms of social work, the quality of life and fulfilling needs of older people. In the end I took interest also in survival strategies of older people solving poverty. For the analysis, I used a qualitative research, which consisted of eight persons, in the same or joint household in urban or agrarian environment of different communities of the Upper Gorenjska region. My main goal was to investigate how the older people are guaranteed with the basic conditions for material security, how the financial position has been changed after retirement, knowing the social rights of older people, getting the information about them and effect of changes in social legislation on lives of older people. I was also interested in older people’s survival strategies that are directly connected to the problem of poverty. During the research, I learned that most older people are satisfied with their current life situation and they mark their financial status as good. They weren’t preparing for retirement, even thought the period from employment to retirement has a negative effect on financial status. They are aware of social legislation and they got the information from different social medias. In most cases the financial help is given to older people by relatives, who are in good relations and keep regular contacts. They would also trust them in case of financial crisis. Older people live a humble life and for facing in financial crisis they disclaim and rationalise consumption of food production at home and save on purchases. In the future it would be necessary to establish more intergenerational collaboration. In local communities it would be needed to provide free legal and financial consoling and persons for consoling social security rights. You can also see the need of intersectional collaboration, connecting and creating compromises with solutions.
