Introduction: Creative activities are often used in occupational therapy, including various writing techniques. Creative activities have great therapeutic value because they increase motivation, enable self-expression, and improve quality of life. Different writing techniques are used in therapy for different purposes and in different fields.
Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to review the research findings and to determine what writing techniques are used for therapeutic purposes. We were also interested in the use of techniques in occupational therapy and in what fields of occupational therapy (eg geriatrics, mental health, pediatrics) the techniques are used.
Methods of work: A systematic literature review was used. The following databases were included in the review: DiKul, CINAHL, PubMed and Google Scholar. The search was done with different combinations of keywords (occupational therapy, creative writing, expressive writing, poetry) in Slovene and English. Out of 57 articles, 19 articles were included in the analysis.
Results: In the literature review, articles were divided into five thematic areas: expressive writing, positive writing, poetry, creative writing, and writing as a therapeutic activity. These writing techniques are often used abroad for various purposes in occupational therapy. Expressive writing is used in adults with depression and positive writing is used in adults and adolescents with anxiety. The techniques are performed individually. Poetry writing and creative writing are performed in a group, especially for people with cancer or dementia. In occupational therapy, writing is most commonly used as therapeutic activity.
Discussion and Conclusion: Writing techniques mentioned above could be used in occupational therapy in Slovenia as activities or occupation, especially in the field of mental health to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety, to cope with stress and traumatic events. Occupational therapists who wish to incorporate techniques into practice are advised to study them in depth.
