There is a high chance of traffic congestion forming near motorway entering ramps during peak hours traffic. Vehicles entering motorway in large platoons cause congestion on the mainline, when operating near capacity. Ramp metering presents one of the methods to successfully deal with recurrent motorway congestions. Ramp meters are traffic signals installed on motorway entering ramps to control the flow rate at which vehicles enter the motorway. Ramp metering can to keep the density below the critical value in order to prevent congestions. Proper ramp metering can increase motorway throughput and travel speed. It also improves travel times and reduce delays. Ramp metering can also improve safety and environmental conditions.
This master thesis covers the theoretical basis of ramp metering systems and their implementation. Theoretical basis are then checked with microsimulation model, which was made to analyse hypothetical ramp metering implementation on motorway entering ramp Domžale in direction of Ljubljana.
