Upbringing is an important lifelong process impossible to avoid in school. It helps the pupils with their self-shaping of personality. It is important to know upbringing styles and, as good pedagogues, strive toward shaping autonomous and indepen-dent individuals capable of judgement and decision-making.
In the theoretical part of the masters’s thesis, I first define upbringing and present upbringing styles. Because there is no upbringing without authority, I present in detail what authority is, define the models of authority as well as different types of teacher’s authority. Since, despite good preventive action, it is impossible to avoid inappropriate behaviour in school and consequential punishment and educational measures, I present in detail the alternative educational measures which are part of the educational plan presented in short in the last part of the theoretical part of the thesis.
In the empirical part of the thesis, with the use of questionnaires for pupils, I conduct a research about the techniques teachers use to establish authority in class, I disco-ver which is the most commonly used authority type among teachers, which alterna-tive educational measures they use and how they reward those pupils who do especially well in specific areas of study. In my research, I include 100 elementary-school pupils from the southeastern part of Slovenia.
