Development and today’s image of the region Zasavje (The Central Sava Valley) and its central municipalities (Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi) are closely connected with discovery of black coal in 1755 and consequently with mining industry. The coalmines are now closed, with mining heritage left behind. This master thesis introduces three local museums (Zasavski muzej Trbovlje, Rudarski muzej Zagorje, 4. dritl) which keep and present the material mining heritage of Zasavje region. Traditional roles of museums in 21st century are nowadays substituted with social role, which is related with term ‘identity’ and modern IT, which is part of local museums in various ways.
Master thesis researches presence of mining heritage in all three municipalities, what the inhabitants of Zasavje relate to it, what do they think about its recognition and searches connections between museum's heritage and their influence on regional identity. Practical part of thesis researches these topics with questionnaire. We have found out that inhabitants of the region have a positive attitude towards mining heritage, and their visit of the museum also has strengthened their regional identity and they think that the region should base tourism development on this heritage.
