The subject of this dissertation is an object of word formation, linguistic science, that study ways of creating new words and it's meaning. We will be also talking about teory of syntax of word formation, which defines complex word as transformation of phrase. We are mostly interested in ways of creating diminutives and augmentatives, which belong to styly-marked words. In Polish and in Slovene this is done by derivation (sin sinek, miza mizica, mesto mestece; kmet kmetavs, koča kočura, fant fante; koń konik, lampa lampka, serce serduszko; nos nochal, szafa szafsko, jabłko jabłucho) or by clipping, that is a special type of derivation, known especially for the formation of augmentatives (Mariča Iča, revež revče; impreza impra, ogórek ogór). We will list some of the most common suffixes, with which we create diminutives and augmentatives in Polish and Slovene and we will provide examples. In the practical part we will work on some most common personal names in Polish and Slovene and we will explore, how to create diminutives and augmentatives from them.
