The thesis describes the development of a sensor module for detection of explosive and toxic gases in explosive environment (Zone 2). With sensor module, we most commonly detect hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen, and also other gases (hydrogen, chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, etc.).
In the first part of the thesis we list and explain the basics of such sensor types. Due to the requirements of the explosive protection, the basics of ATEX directive are described along with requirements and regulations which are important for this type of sensor module.
Main topic is dedicated to presentation of the individual parts of the sensor module. All the calculations, schemes, PCB drawings, simulations and measurement results are shown there. The development of the software for main microcontroller and development of graphic user’s interface is also briefly described.
In the last part we present some obstacles that were encountered during the development of the sensor and the ways by which we successfully overcame them.
