The focus of my thesis is on the principle of normalisation in the Special Social Care Home Demir Kapija in Macedonia. In the theoretical part of the thesis I define the concept of total institutions and their effect on individuals living in them. I explain the process of deinstitutionalisation where I focus on the institutional care, offered by total institutions. Furthermore I focus on the history of deinstitutionalisation in Macedonia, the good and bad forms of professional practice used there and convey the history of the Special Social Care Home Demir Kapija to present a clearer picture of their work. I finish the theoretical segment by explaining the concept of normalisation with the help of Brandon’s five principals of normalisation and I clarify why and how it can be used to make even the smallest steps in improving the quality of life of the people living in institutions. The empirical part of the thesis is focused on the first stage of normalisation in the institute based on observation, which we employed throughout the time spent in our educational camp in the Special Social Care Home Demir Kapija, guided by Brandon’s five principles of normalisation.
