In the thesis Merging photography and drawing, I connect four art areas: drawing, photography, collage and photomontage, which are also combined in the final artwork, based on photomontage and expressive drawing. I included my own poetry, inspired by the work of the Slovenian poet Boris A. Novak, to the individual artworks. I divide the thesis into the theory and practical art part.
In the theoretical part of the diploma I use the method of literature study and gathering information to describe the art concepts and art techniques with the intention to understand the diploma subject better. In the drawing section I present two important artists, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, highlighting their expressional drawings. In the next section, photography, I present the connection between photography and art, I explain the options of capturing photos and I present the work of the artist Man Ray. The following section, photomontage, starts with a description of the historical development of the art technique. Focusing on dadaism, when photomontage first appeared and became an official artistic technique. In the same section I also highlight some examples from the following photomontage artists, dadaists Hannah Hoch, Erwin Blumenfeld, Linder Sterling, Jesse Draxler and John Stezaker.
In the practical part I present my photomontages, which were created with my own photography, accompanied by expressive drawing. Each artwork has a short poem which I wrote and is united in substance with the artwork. In the end I analyse all the works and describe them with a formal and content analysis.
