The thesis examines the risks of exposure to lead and its compounds, and outlines how to avoid harmful effects on humans. Lead is a heavy metal that poses a threat mainly due to anthropogenic emission sources and is dangerous because many people don’t even know they are exposed.
In the diploma thesis, I have presented the properties of lead, its use throughout history and hence possible sources of exposure. I described the harmful effects of lead on the individual and presented the effects that lead can leave on short and long-term exposure.
In Slovenia, pollution with lead is most present in the Mežica valley, where lead has accumulated in the environment through long-term mining and is still destroying the health of the inhabitants. In the experimental work, I presented the present state of pollution in Mežica valley and described the program of measures that they accepted and proposed some other additional measures. I also associated with measures that were taken abroad.
In the following, I examined the profession of a glassmaker who is exposed to lead in the profession of lead oxide. With a security engineer in Rogaška, I completed a questionnaire, which I prepared to familiarize myself with security measures, and thus to assess the possibilities of raising the level of security culture in the company.
