On the eve of the historic event called Reformation a few processes were going on inside the Catholic Church which in the following period helped to the inner reform and prove the Church's will to take the right path. Because of its originality and meaning the efforts for a reform in Spain are presented. Due to a good cooperation between the Crown and leaders of the Church there was no need for the Reformation. The Spanish participants gave a significant contribution to the reform program passed by the Council of Trent. Many religious orders, including the one which Martin Luther joined, had been renewed. Finally, the popes became aware of their duties. The example of Pope Hadrian VI is presented which was not well received by the Romans. His very short papacy did not allow him to carry out the reform program and to preserve the German Church as a part of the Catholic community. It should not be overlooked that the Reformation cannot be explained with religious reasons only
