In the study we analyzed 1) the distribution and abundance of Sorbus species in Idrijsko – Cerkljansko montane region, and 2) growth characteristics of whitebeam (Sorbus aria Crantz) in relation to a social status of a tree. In order to achieve the first goal, Slovenian Forest Service provided us data on forest stands and permanent sample plots for our study area. The second goal was realized through carrying out trunk analyses of six whitebeam trees. In the study area only two Sorbus species are present, namely rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.) and whitebeam. Both species are found in stands covering 13 % of the research area, representing only 0.35 % in the total growing stock. Whitebeam grows relatively slow in height and thickness. Height growth showed much more evident patterns related to social status of a tree than did the diameter and volume growth. The results showed that even though whitebeam is considered as a shade-intolerant species, it has the ability to grow slowly under the canopy waiting for improved light conditions and when they appear it can successfully react with increased height growth. Since whitebeam is a thermophilic species, this finding of our study is important in terms of adaptaiton of forests to climate changes. Sorbus species are minority species in the studied forests and wider and need special attention in silvicultural measures. However, they can also be maintained under the canopy as a lower storey of a stand.
