Nowadays it is impossible to imagine food without packaging, even when it comes to pet food. It is difficult to imagine how our ancestors survived without packaging, since everything is wrapped in it today and it represents one of the main communication links with customers as well. Pets have always been a big part of many families. People’s love and affection towards their pets grow by the day and we tend to pamper them more and more. With that, the market of pet food packaging has flourished and we can see a vast variety of food and treats in various packaging.
In this master's thesis, we focused exclusively on the storage and packaging of dry pet food and the problem that arises there. The problem we primarily face is the way of closing the open packaging. It has been determined that most packaging for such food type is not adequately equipped with a closing system, which leads to faster deterioration of food and easier penetration of harmful insects into the packaging itself. On the other hand, this causes significant money loss for the food industry as well as for the consumers. These unwanted insects cause various types of morphological damage on the packaging, depending on the type of insects and packaging material. Based on the defective closing systems, we decided to form a closing system in the form of a cap. The master thesis deals with the research, design and production of a closing system for packaging. In the theoretical part, we presented the scope of packaging, its functions, materials used for this type of goods, ways of closing the packaging and we included the existing research in the field of penetration of harmful insects into packaging as well. Based on the current state of packaging on the market, we presented the most commonly used packaging materials with different closing methods. In the experimental part, we analysed polymer materials, planned and then produced an innovative closing method.
