Blindness and visual impairment are conditions, that can affect many. They can manifest as birth defects, or later in life as a result of different medical reasons or injuries.
People with visual impairment sense the world differently than fully sensual people, especially children in their early years. While children are growing, they’re exploring the world and the environment. At this period picture books have a big influence on children, visually impaired or not, as they learn through and with them while exploring the world.
Literature intended for people with visual impairment has to be properly adjusted visually and textually. Adjustment guidelines come from experts’ and professionals’ recommendations that deal with designing the literature for blind and visual impaired. There is not much material in this field of literature, especially for children in the lower age group.
The purpose of this thesis was to design a picture book, which content would be visually and textually adjusted for children with visual impairment. We wanted to create a book, that could be used for learning, and ad the same time fun and interesting. While designing the children’s picture book we considered the recommendations and instructions of proffesionals and good examples that exist.
The goal of this thesis was to properly prepare the digital version of the picture book, designed for children with visual impairment. The narrative of the picture book features a group of five animals, that live on a farm. In the thesis the development of illustrations from pictures of animals based on their story line is presented.
The result of the thesis is a graphical document of the picture book prepared for digital print.
