The Graduation Thesis provides short overview of ideology of “mentally ill” person from medical (traditional) and social (constructive) point of view. This represent the thesis ground in which I build my theory of historical development of total institution and the process of institutionalization. Despite the processes of deinstitutionalisation, normalization and destigmatization, are people with mental health problems still discriminated and are living on the social edge. Many different non-governmental organizations are taking place in a mental health area and with their programs, are providing quality, normal and decent life. Among all non-governmental organizations are: Šent, Ozara, Vezi, Novi paradoks and Altra; organization of which people were target group in my research. Prime purpose in my graduation thesis was not to stereotype life in and out of the institution, but to identify how did users experience life and daily activities in the institution and in the community. With five different themes of comparison, I have made a conclusion, which shows, that users experience with institutional life were negative, with some positive aspects. They also mentioned some negativity in the community, for example lack of professional workers and lack of integration between psychiatric and social field.
