In diploma thesis we presented the field of typographic design. In the first part, we determined the basic theoretical aspects of the typography in the defined characteristics of the fonts.
The purpose of the diploma thesis was to determine which typefaces are better choice for using on the screen and are more legible and readable. Not all typefaces are suitable to be presented on the screen, as various design features do not contribute to faster processing and understanding.
In our research work we digitalized our handwritten typeface, based on sketches we made at the beginning. The new typeface is named CitKat. Later on we prepared three different short texts, which were written with three different typefaces. We compared the reading speed and number of fixations in each text, using a device that tracks eye movements. In conclusion, our script turned out to be more appropriate, contrary to what we initially expected. We confirmed the initial hypothesis, that serif typeface would be the best choice to use on the screen, as serifs help to guide the reader's eye across the page.
