The purpose of the master’s thesis is to study what the impact of a certain parenting style on the self concept of an adolescent and his academic achievement is. In the research, we focused mostly on the three most important and known parenting styles of the author D. Baumrind (1967; 1971; 1991). These are authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive parenting style. 368 adolescents of the third year of the grammar school program or secondary technical school or secondary vocational school participated. The adolescents filled in the demographic questionnaire, the Parental Authority Questionnaire for the Mother's and Father's Parenting Style (PAQ) (Jurič, 2006), and the Self Description Questionnaire (SDQ) III (Avsec, 2007). On the basis of the acquired data, we ascertained that according to the evaluations of Slovenian adolescents, authoritative parenting style on average prevails in the case of both parents, and that male adolescents evaluate their parents’ strictness more mildly in comparison to the female adolescents. We also ascertained that authoritative parenting style of both parents has a positive and significant impact on general, academic, and emotional self concept, on the verbal expression of adolescents, on their relationships with parents, and on their problem-solving. The authoritarian style of mothers and fathers, however, functions negatively on the listed scales of self concept. The results showed no connection between the permissive parenting style of a mother and a father with the scales of the self concept of adolescents. It also turned out that authoritative parenting style of a mother and a father has a significant and positive impact on the adolescent’s academic achievement and that on average highly educated fathers and mothers use an authoritative parenting style more. The results also show that on the average grammar school students and adolescents from secondary technical schools get more authoritative parenting style by mother in comparison to the adolescents of secondary vocational schools. The contribution of the research is an insight into the use of parenting style of parents as evaluated by adolescents in the Slovenian area. The ascertainments the research offers are transmittable to the practical level of work, i.e. they are useful for the educational guidance with adolescents and also for making the parents aware what significance a certain parenting style has for the adolescent’s self concept and academic achievement.
