This master's thesis presents the methodological approach of studying the terminology of a specialized field on the basis of corpus data. After examining the relevant linguistic and terminological theories, we will focus on frame semantics and frame-based terminology, which are the basis for the empirical part of the task, since they interrelate the study of terminology with cognitive, sociological and cultural factors. In the theoretical part, we will also present the specialized field of karstology from which the data for the research was extracted. Aforementioned scientific domain has been closely linked with the Slovene Karst from its beginnings. The research is based on the terminological analysis of definitions derived from the corpus of karst texts. The obtained definitions for karst terms were analysed on the basis of the annotation scheme developed for the TermFrame project and this master's thesis. Within the analysis, we will explore the reasons for the possible variability of definitions, the cognitive frames in the backdrop of (specialised) language and how all these factors affect the structure of definitions in different contexts. In the latter part, we will make a smaller qualitative interlingual analysis, where examples of definitions for two karst terms from the Slovenian corpus will be compared with English definitions obtained from the dictionaries of karst terminology.
