Introduction: Today, infertile couples may use various techniques of fertilisation with biomedical help, which can help fulfill the desire for their own child. Despite advanced treatment techniques, women experience infertility as the most stressful situation in their life and require psychological support and counseling. Purpose: With the diploma thesis, we wanted to explore the feelings that women experience after an unsuccessful attempt of fertilisation and to find out how women cope with unsuccessful treatment. Methods: In the diploma thesis we used the descriptive method of work. Data collection was carried out by reviewing and analyzing national and international scientific and professional literature in the field of fertilisation with biomedical assistance. National and international databases were used: COBISS, DiKUL, PubMed, Google Schoolar and ScienceDirect. The diploma work included literature published between 2001 and 2018, inclusion criteria were as follows: written in English, accessibility of the entire text and content adequacy. Six studies were included in the review. Results: An overview of the six included studies revealed that women are experiencing great psychological stress during and after infertility treatment. Unsuccessful treatment has a negative impact on the self-esteem and self-image of a woman. Consequently, it can have a negative impact on partner relationship an the social environment of a woman. To cope with infertility, women often use different coping strategies that can help facilitate the transition to childlessness. Discussion and conclusion: Infertility is the most difficult experience in the life of a couple, and it is important that the midwife provides them with useful information and is a source of support for mourning in an unsuccessful attempt.
