The topic of the present master`s thesis is focused on treatment of mechanically damaged glass plate negatives from photo library of the National Gallery of Slovenia. The stability of this kind of glass plate negatives depends on the quality of the constituent materials, fabrication and last but not least, from the circumstances in which they are stored. For that reason, the theoretical part focuses on the brief history of glass plate negatives, material structure and typical deterioration. In the following there are also described some basic guidelines for identification, storage and digitalization, as well as the current practice of conservation-restoration of mechanically damaged glass plate negatives.
The practical part presents the results of the inventory and the analysis of the condition of all mechanically damaged glass plate negatives from the photo library of the National Gallery of Slovenia. In order to show the currently most suitable ways of stabilization of mechanically damaged glass plate negatives, we have selected three representative examples on which we have carried out conservation-restoration interventions. The master`s thesis is concluded with a discussion in which the results of the conservation and restoration work are evaluated.
