Thesis explores the creation and development of historical drama in Slovene lands in the period after the 1848 Spring of Nations, which created a Slovene national movement. In literature, Slovene and Slavic motifs emerged as a consequence, and in drama, first Slovene theatre organization, Drama Society was founded in 1867. Drama Society had a strong influence on the development of Slovene historical drama. For investigation purposes, I will analyse three dramatic works of the era, which could be construed as historical plays. First two were written by Josip Jurčič and are titled Tugomer and Veronika Deseniška, third was an attempt at historical drama called Samo, prvi slovenski kralj, written by France Remec. The analysis is trying to answer certain questions: did the revolution of 1848 influence these dramas, did these works help spread Slovene national awareness and contribute to national movement, as well as, how much of the two authors' work was influenced by recorded history.
