The practical part of this BA thesis consists of developing a first-person exploration game titled The Gap. Due to all the challenges and multidisciplinary requirements, the game was produced cooperatively; each student contributed its own knowledge and skills from different branches of game development. The Gap is built in Unreal Engine 4, which is – due to its flexibility – currently one of the most popular game engines on the market.
The analytical part of the BA thesis focuses on exploring the roles and conjunction of story and gameplay in video games. With rising significance game developers attribute to the story, video games have become an alternative, yet popular medium of storytelling. Besides spiking player’s imagination with traditional narrative elements, games enable active participation in the story itself. This satisfies the player’s primary drive for taking action.
