Introduction: The main reason for mortality in the developed world to which Slovenia is also classified is noncommunicable diseases. A great share of these diseases can be prevented by reducing the factors of risk. The concept of empowerment can contribute to an individual’s health and well-being. Therefore, it is important that all health workers are familiar with it and use it when working. Purpose: The purpose of the bachelor’s thesis is to define the role of a nurse in the empowerment of the patients with noncommunicable diseases. The goal of the bachelor’s thesis is to ascertain by which measures the nurse in community health nursing can influence the empowerment of the patients with noncommunicable diseases. Methods: The descriptive method of work was used with the review of the scientific literature in the English language. The latter was acquired through the web portal of the Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana, bibliographical databases MEDLINE, CINAHL with Full Text, and through the information service ScienceDirect. 13 articles were included in the review. Results: The measures that a nurse can influence on empowerment in treating patients with chronic noncommunicable diseases can be divided into two groups. In the first group is exposed interaction between the nurse and the patient. In the second group is the relationship of the nurse with the health promotion and healthy lifestyle. Into the group of interactions connected with the patient, we listed the health care which is based on the empowerment, an integral treatment of the family, and encouragement to health literacy. Into the group of interactions, connected with the nurse, we listed the influences on the empowerment by means of relationship of the nurse towards the promotion of health and a healthy lifestyle in working activities of the nurses. Discussion and conclusion: The way of the empowerment has to be adapted to the needs of every individual. Knowledge and skill of communicating of the nurse in community health nursing are essential in the promotion of the health and empowerment. The health system should enable the nurse in community health nursing with more professional training and education in this field. We believe that with the right approach and appropriate communication we can achieve changes in the behavior of patients about a healthy lifestyle. It is important that we include in this process also those who do not show immediate interest for empowerment.
