The present master’s thesis deals with relation among respect, intimacy, and fear of intimacy. Deep partner relationship is based on respect and intimacy. Couples lacking mutual respect cannot develop deep intimate relationship since respect is an important part of the relationships.
In the empirical survey of the master’s thesis, we research the field of respect and deep intimacy that can only be achieved with someone whom we trust and we dare to disclose ourselves. Therefore, we decided to research this field in the population of married or those in serious partner relationship aged from 25 to 60 years. We were mainly interested in how partners or spouses experience respect in relation to intimacy or fear of intimacy. We were also interested whether differences among genders in experiencing partner’s respect, intimacy and fear of intimacy exist.
Results of the survey revealed the importance of partner’s respect in relation to intimacy and fear of intimacy, since there is a very high positive relation among partner’s respect and intimacy. While parental patterns (respect mother–father and vice versa) have much lower impact or connection with current intimacy among partners. Fear of intimacy is negatively related to intimacy. Men and women are statistically importantly different among themselves in fear of intimacy, namely men experience higher level of fear of intimacy than women do.
