The group of visually impaired and blind people in Slovenia is small but very diverse at the same time. They perceive the world differently than normally sighted people. Therefore, visually impaired and blind need individual adaptations in everyday life and learning. The most vulnerable group are children who start to learn and discover life itself at the same time but their visual impairment makes it more difficult. Qualitatively prepared learning materials are not often available because they are a minority.
For this purpose, we decided to create a picture book for the visually impaired within the research of the diploma’s thesis, which would be content and the visually adapted, so that in future it could be simply transformed (redesigned) even for the blind. Due to the specificity of the individual damages and/or injuries of sight, it is impossible to satisfy the needs of all visually impaired and blind people at the same time. However, there are some general recommendations that enable satisfaction of visual and tactile recognition of a wider group of users (e.g. readers).
The aim of the diploma’s thesis was to create a picture book for visually impaired children where the most typical and recognizable buildings of the seven continents of the world will be presented. The study presents the adaptation development of the selected photographs into the appropriately adapted illustrations, which included the appropriate amount of recognizable elements.
The result of the diploma’s thesis is a picture book, which is prepared and designed for visually impaired as well as normally sighted children. The adaptations of the selected illustrations in the diploma’s thesis were also made for them with a desire later to adapt the existing picture book also for the blind children.
